The swordfish lives a life of extremes.  Found in all oceans of the world, it has the distinctive ability to adapt quickly between swimming on the relatively warm ocean surface and cruising at frigid depths where even the light of the sun does not intrude. Swordfish use this special ability to hunt their prey, the nocturnal squid, which tend to swim deep during the light of day but rise to the surface as night falls.  

Each summer, the Atlantic gulf stream dispatches eddies of clear blue water laden with squid and other baitfish against the great canyon wall south of Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard, attracting a myriad of predatory sportfish.  This creates a brief window for local anglers to enjoy one of the most bountiful fisheries to be found anywhere.  It is during this time that islanders anxiously anticipate the rising of the mystical Swordy Moon, when mid-summer’s brightest full moon appears in a cloudless sky, illuminating the ocean surface below.  Anglers have long known that the largest fish are most often taken during a full moon, when massive schools of squid rise toward the surface and become easy prey to predators such as the swordfish, or “swordy”, as locals call it. 

Hence the name, “Swordy Moon”.  The brand for Swordy Moon is inspired by the image of the majestic swordfish bursting through the calm ocean surface against the backdrop of a shining full moon, a “Swordy Moon”.  An icon of strength, and yet a thing of beauty, with no restriction to its ranging, traveling to wherever its yearning takes it.
